Muehlenbeckia complexa - Scrambling Pohuehue
Fast growing native coastal vine.
This is a native ground cover that is fast growing into a tangled mass of brown wiry stems with small round leaves
A tough plant that is very good for covering banks and other awkward areas and for coastal situations. It can also be trained as a climber if given a structure such as chicken mesh, to climb on.
Planted in the wrong spot it can over power smaller plants and shrubs
It is semi-deciduous growing to 4.5 m or more up suitable supports, and produces swollen white berries with black seeds. Leaves turn bronzy before dropping in late fall/early winter. Any reasonably well drained soil will suit this agreeable groundcover, and drought, salt spray, and wind are all tolerated
