The finger lime is a lovely Australian native that can do really well across the North Island, especially with a bit of shelter and protection from frost.
It produces long, colourful fruit filled with “citrus caviar” pearls — a real treat with seafood, desserts, and cocktails.
Why people love it:
- It’s a small, thorny citrus shrub with lots of character
- The fruit is packed with lime-flavoured pearls that pop beautifully
- It’s self-fertile and can be very productive once established
Growth and size:
- It grows as a thorny, bushy shrub or small tree
- In home gardens it is often kept around 2–3 m tall and wide, though it can grow larger in ideal conditions
- Growth is usually slow to moderate, so it’s a plant that rewards a little patience
- Grafted plants may start fruiting in about 2–3 years, while cutting-grown plants can take much longer
Best growing conditions:
- It loves warmth and plenty of full sun
- Good drainage is really important
- Protect it from frost, especially in the first few years (a pot can be a great option)
- It will be happiest against a north-facing wall or in a greenhouse
Easy care tips:
- Water regularly through summer, then go a little lighter in winter
- Feed with a citrus fertiliser to keep it healthy and happy
- Once settled in, it’s wonderfully easy to look after
