Bergenia
Common Names: Elephant’s Ears, Pig Squeak, Heartleaf Bergenia
Bergenia is a hardy evergreen perennial that thrives in New Zealand’s temperate climate. Known for its bold, leathery foliage and vibrant flower spikes, Bergenia adds texture and colour to shaded garden beds, borders, and rockeries. Its foliage deepens to red-bronze in cooler months, offering year-round interest.
From late winter into early spring, Bergenia produces upright stems topped with clusters of pink, white, or ruby-red flowers. These blooms attract pollinators and brighten shaded corners when little else is flowering.
Full sun to part shade; thrives even in heavy shade. Likes moist, well-drained; tolerates clay with added compost. It is semi-drought tolerant once established and Frost hardy; mulch in colder regions for root protection
Feed in early spring with general garden fertiliser. Remove spent flowers and damaged leaves regularly cutting back unruly foliage in autumn to maintain shape. Watch for slugs/snails in damp conditions; use organic deterrents
Bergenia’s dense foliage helps suppress weeds and reduce soil erosion, making it a great choice for low-maintenance, eco-friendly landscaping.
