A small native shrub or small tree that grows in clay soil in scrubby areas of the upper North Island.
The leaves are dark green and oval in shape and wrinkled.
The densely packed corymbs of bright yellow flowers appear in spring giving it the name of golden tainui.
It is useful for areas of poor soils but as it can be short lived it is a good filler plant while more permenant plantings establish
Soil should be well drained as prone to root rots It will tolerate only light frosts
. It is best known for its medicinal properties. and as the leaves and flowers contain saponin which when rubbed in water provide a lather that is good for washing,
